Genre Research - Science Fiction Genre In Relation To Our Film
Sci-Fi (Science Fiction) is a genre based on concepts and fictional events such as time travel, space, aliens and more. Science fiction has been around for hundreds of years, really gaining popularity in the 19th century with the sudden surge of Science Fiction novels such as Jules Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea which helped push the Sci-Fi genre into the mainstream world of books, along with Mary Shelly's Frankenstein. The first Sci-Fi film is often considered to be the 1902 short film, A Trip to the Moon which pioneered a lot of early Sci-Fi films with it's technical special effects such as cinematography, set design and animation.
Science fiction has only continued to grow since then. Much like many genres (especially horror), the genre also branched out into many sub genres over time. Some examples of this is are sci-fi horror, time travel movies, sci-fi fantasy and alien movies. Due to this development of subgenre, we have inputted both comedy and tragedy elements into our film to branch out and target a wider audience.
Our film will focus on the effects of time travel in a comedy aspect; showing the work of the butterfly effect but giving even depressing situations a light hearted and ironic feel. Our film will be similar to Tree House of Horror V episode of The Simpsons, specifically the Time and Punishment segment; showing how the slightest thing can effect the future, giving it a different outcome. The use of a seemingly normal device (a fidget spinner instead of a toaster) was also inspired by this episode.
Our film will also be similar to the 2015 video game Life Is Strange in many aspects; being inspired by it's simple time re wind ability to fix mistakes of the past. The main character's name and age (late teens) is also a reference to the main protagonist of the game, Maxine Caulfield.
