Conventions of sub genres, storylines and characters
Throughout the 20th century, science fiction as a genre expanded and opened up new horizons through the work of sub genres. Sub genres are used to connect a different genre to the main genre to attract a wider audience and give extra insight on a films purpose. Some examples of sub genres for science fiction include: Sci-Fi fantasy, Sci-Fi comedy, Sci-Fi action and also Sci-Fi romance. Due to the science fiction genre constantly expanding and developing sub genres, this has influenced what genre our film is as we have decided to add both comedy and tragedy to our film making the film a sci-fi comedy. As the sci-fi genre branched out to many different sub genres the sci-fi genre became more popular as fans of other genres started to watch sci-fi hybrids due to their favourite genre being part of the film. For example Paul is a hybrid of comedy and sci-fi therefore a lot of comedy fans went to watch Paul at the cinemas and on DVD due to Paul being another great comedy being released.
One key aspect that influenced our films genre would be the storyline. Throughout the science fiction there are vast amounts of storylines ranging from finding an extra terrestrial being and harbouring a fugitive to time travel where you change the future for the better or worse. Our storyline focuses around a teenage boy finding a fidget spinner that magically takes him back in time. Therefore due to the time travelling aspect this influenced our film to be placed in the sci-fi genre. In addition we have a comedy sub genre to our story as the main character rewinds mundane tasks instead of serious situations such as re-tasting food and re-spawning in a video game. An example of a storyline that features time travel in the sci-fi genre is The Time Machine. In this film the main character rewinds time to the past and fast forwards time to the future to change history leading to a different future however like our films storyline, the film leads to a tragic ending so this conveys to the audience that time travel shouldn't be messed with whilst entertaining the audience through the storyline and the genre.
Another key aspect that influenced our films genre would be the main character. Main characters in the science fiction are normally the heroic character who saves humanity from extinction or who has to overcome scientific problems and discoveries. However due to our film being a hybrid of science fiction and comedy, we decided to make our main character Maximillion humorous and dopey so that the storyline can flow more easily and by having our main character rewind mundane events instead of serious events which adds the comedy to our story. Our main actor (Liam Bowskill) reflects this in everyday life as he is laid back and has a lack lustre attitude which would perfectly reflect the role of Maximillian. This kind of attitude is normally presented in comedies such as Snow White and Dumb and Dumber as Jim Carey perfectly portrays a immature character while Dopey in Snow White conveys dopiness.
