Analysis of short film

Analysis of a short film

The Black Hole

Cinematography:

The cinematography in this film is quite effective as they use a lot of close ups of the man's expressions to connote how shocked he is and how quickly his shock changes to greed. A shot where this is particularly shown is when he is eyeline matched with the door to the room of the safe and from that shot alone, you know his shock changes to greed.

In addition to the close ups, they also use shallow focuses to focus on the man in the scene rather than anything else in the scene to further emphasise his expressions. The cinematography at the beginning of the film is also effective as the camera dollies into a close up of his face to portray how bored the main character is feeling.

Mise en scene:

When the clip first starts you can immediately tell that this event is happening to a pretty normal person. Firstly, we can tell this from the tinted blue lighting in the scene which emphasises a dull and cold tone to the scene which portrays he's in a working class job as the blue makes the scene have a lack of excitement too it. Additionally we can infer he as a working class job and is a regular man due to the fact that the room is a pretty standard office with a lack of technology other than a computer and a photocopier. We can see this at the beginning of the film when the camera starts with an establishing long shot that dollies to a close up of the man's face.

Furthermore the mise en scene depicts that the worker is tired of his job and staying behind pretty late due to the way his tie is slooping around his neck and also the way he is slouched portrays that he is tired of his job which also supports the idea of the guy being pretty normal and working in a working class office based job.

Sound:

The sound in the clip contains only diegetic office sounds such as the printer printing off sheets and the man in the scene moving around which could emphasise how mundane and boring his job is. Therefore by shooting the black hole in a casual everyday office this adds extra realism and this emphasizes how strange this situation is as it's happening to a normal person.

Editing:

Throughout the short film the film contains a lot of slow paced editing which adds to the effect of how average his job is and how the time is dragging a there isn't a lot of elliptical editing. In addition to this the main character is constantly eye line matched with the black hole and what he's going to use it on next to emphasise his shock and his greed from the vending machine to the safe.

Furthermore, throughout the short film a cold, de-saturated filter is applied to the office to further emphasise the dull work life he has and how the black hole could change his life. However, when he discovers the black hole, the teel blue de-saturated filter is still applied which could forshadow the fact that even though he has discovered something incredible, it doesn't draw away from the fact that the main character is stuck in a dead end job and this is conveyed as he suffers from the greed of his personality.
