Sci-Fi Genre Research
The Sci-Fi genre is a genre focused around imaginative concepts and fictional events such as time travel and extra terrestrial life forms. Science fiction first originated in 1902 with the film A Trip to the Moon that was one of the most iconic films of the century and from then science fiction has only continued to grow since then. In addition to science fiction progressively becoming a bigger genre, the genre also developed in another way as it branched out into a lot of sub genres over time. Some examples of this is how the films started as just science fiction however now their is sci-fi horror, sci-fi comedy, sci-fi fantasy and also sci-fi romance. The sci-fi genre covers a vast amount of storylines from Star Wars travelling across the galaxy to fight species from another planet to Back to the Future where Marty McFly travels back in time to save his parents marriage. Due to this development of subgenres influencing the science fiction genre, this has affected our own storyline as we have inputted both comedy and tragedy elements into our film to branch out and target a wider audience.

Many science fiction films from the early 20th century were inspired from English literature due to the creativity and freedom in how literature writers showcased their work. One of the main reasons of taking inspiration from English literature was due to the fact that the literature poems were seen as a protest against what's wrong in the world and supernatural occurances. Therefore the science fiction genre took these ideas as inspirations and produced them as feature length films showcasing these contrasting viewpoints and perspectives. As well as literature being a key inspiration for the science fiction genre, there was a more simplistic reasoning to why the science fiction genre became more popular and that was the sense of curiosity and wonder. For hundreds of years many people have wondered how the world started and whether supernatural beings existed and to display this curiosity, the science fiction genre took queries like this and made feature length films on what the director thinks about supernatural species and how the world originated. this evolution of science fiction lead to other directors and producers making films of their own opinionative perspectives through their imagination and creativity.
When creating our own film we are going to focus around the concepts of time travel and the theme of how messing with time has more negatives than positives such as the butterfly effect. We will illustrate this in our film by our main character using time travel to accomplish mundane tasks however due to his care free attitude and his lack lustre nature this leads to our main protagonist stuck in the past forever as the dinosaur destroys his time travelling fidget spinner (spoiler alert). A film similar to our film would be Click as he can fast forward time but in the end he realises he has missed out on all the important things in life that didn't seem important to begin with.
Another similar film to ours is Edge of Tomorrow. This is similar to our film due to Tom Cruise reliving the same moment over and over. However, in this film Tom Cruise relives the same moment to learn from his mistakes to progress whereas our main character is reliving mundane, everyday tasks and ends up accidentally preventing serious outcomes.
By illustrating a pessimistic ending to our film with a comedic storyline, this persuades the audience to feel like the film is an enjoyable experience whilst also reminding them that messing with time travel has its consequences. We tend to see a tragic or comedic ending in all comedies like I have portrayed in Click and Edge of Tomorrow. However, to achieve a comedic ending we couldn't reinforce the consequences of time travel therefore to lighten the mood of the tragic ending we will add a scream of a girl as a diegetic sound to convey to the audience our main character is running like a little girl.
